Summer of 2025

Summer brings the WWGofGA picnic!

If you missed our August meeting be certain to view Fred White’s discussion on tool restoration at our website.  Our guild donated several older tools to a non-profit group in the Florida panhandle through Fred.  They had lost theirs, which had been destroyed by floods.  Fred did the restoration of our donation and shared with us his extensive knowledge and procedures while accomplishing this rewarding task.  Bring those old and rusted tools back to life and avoid the landfills.

How long in Atlanta: I’ve been in Atlanta 62 years. I moved here to pursue an advanced

degree at Emory University, loved the city, and stayed.

What did you do professionally: I was a Nursing Service Administrator, a Nurse Practitioner,

later graduated Life University, had a private practice as a Holistic Chiropractor using my

background in both fields.

How long have you been woodworking: If you count carpentry, I’ve been working with wood

for about 80 years. About as soon as I could lift a hammer or steady the end of a board, I was

assigned by my father (a carpenter & later, a minister) to help him and men in his congregations

built 3 churches & a parsonage, then a new home for us— literally! As a teenager I wasn’t

happy about my “assignment” but now realize what a wonderful gift Dad gave me.

How did you get interested in woodworking: In my twenties, I saw a molded light fixture I

couldn’t afford; sketched a picture, then with my circular saw made a base of wood, bought some

molding, antique sconces from a salvage yard, wiring & a switch from the hardware store; made

the fixture which hung on my wall for years. I discovered I could create things with wood, but

did little. I remodeled 2 houses, refurbished a third &volunteered for Habitat but knew basically

nothing about fine woodworking. When building a breakfast table, a friend told me about the

Guild. WOW! I joined in 1989, began to observe, listen, ask questions and practice. Instead of

knocking a stud into line with a hammer, I learned scrupulous measuring, wood movement and

more. I was hooked. I am deeply grateful for the Guild, those who keep it going, all that I have

learned, and all that we offer in service even though I cannot participate as actively now.

Favorite type of projects: Furniture, charcuterie boards, clocks, mirror or picture frames, toys

for children, unusual pieces. I’m open to almost anything anyone wants me to make. I love

teaching & currently, devote one afternoon a week teaching woodworking to a neighbor who has

mostly recovered from a stroke.

Social Media and Our Guild

The Guild uses social media to inform the public of our activities, boost membership and promote woodworking in general.
We have pages on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, plus we run a public Facebook group to encourage a multi-way dialog with interested woodworkers.

Links for all of these may be found on the web at: linktr.ee/wwgofga

We are always looking for ways to increase and enhance our social media posts, but need help in doing so.  Send email to social@wwgofga.com if you might be interested in joining our social media team.
